# What is an argument?

The word "argument" for most of usdenotes the statement that is given to prove a certain proposition. However, this word has less well-known meanings. In this article, we will explain in more detail what an argument is, and we will reveal a number of meanings for this term.

## Argument in mathematics

From the school bench from the lessons of algebra, most of us remember the phrase "function argument", however, not everyone can explain what it means.

The argument of a function is an independent variable on which its value depends. For example, in the equation y = 2x, y is a function, and x is the argument of the function.

Also in mathematics you can hear such phrases,as an argument of a complex number, the argument of maximization and minimization, but this is much more complicated terms that are difficult to understand without proper preparation.

The word argument is also used in logic, denoting an argument or group of reasons that are supported by another statement. However, the definition of an argument in logic is very similar to its well-known meaning.
