What is a broken line?
In geometry, one often encounters such a notion,as "broken". Therefore, we decided to tell you in detail about what a broken line is, and about its components. We start with a general definition, and then describe the individual elements of the broken line - links, vertices. And, of course, you will know how the broken line differs from the straight line and the curved lines not only visually, but, of course, from the geometric point of view.
What is a broken line
A broken line is a geometric figure,which is an indirect line, which consists of successively connected segments. These segments can be connected under completely different angles and even intersect, but they should not line up in a straight line. Strictly speaking, if there is at least a small, even barely noticeable angle between the segments to be joined, then it will be a broken line. This polyline differs from a straight line. A straight line can also consist of segments, but the angle of connection of these segments must be zero, otherwise it will be a question of a broken line. As for the difference between a broken line and a curve, it is also very simple here - segments of a broken line represent a straight line, and no curve segments.
Types of broken lines
Broken pipes can be built in different ways: Thus, there are closed and nonclosed broken lines, self-intersecting and disjoint. A closed broken line represents a certain figure - a polygon. A self-intersecting line is a broken line whose segments have intersections. Good examples of various broken lines with comments can be found here. Also a detailed view of the various types of broken lines is given here. As you probably already guessed, broken lines can be of four types in their structure:
- Unclosed without intersections;
- closed without intersections;
- unclosed self-intersecting;
- closed self-intersecting.
Now let's talk about what is the link of the broken line. The links of a broken line are called its sides or segments, of which the line itself consists. A broken line can be called such a line, which consists of at least two links. One link is just a piece. And a few words about what is the top of the broken line. The vertices of the broken line are the points representing the ends of some segments of the broken line and, correspondingly, the beginning of the others. In geometry, it is customary to designate these points in Latin letters, and the broken line itself is called by the notation of these vertices. For example, the broken line ABCDKLMN.
