The final essay on literature in 2018: topics, directions
For all students of the 11th grade, the first test of 2018 will be the final essay, which future graduates will have to write in early December. Pupils of ordinary schools, gymnasiums and lyceums should not relax, as this year’s graduation essay (presentation), or as it is sometimes called, the “December essay”, will not be canceled, although the Ministry of Education and Science does not announce fundamental changes.
Anyone who has moved to grade 11 in the 2017-2018 year is invited to learn:
Dates of the final essay of 2018
Three attempts will be given to the graduates of 2017-2018 years, in order to reveal the proposed topics and successfully write an essay on literature:
- December 6, 2017 is the main day allotted for writing graduation works in all schools of the Russian Federation.
- February 7, 2018 - the first retake for those who receive a “failure” during the first December attempt or for any reason will not be able to take part in the main test round.
- May 16, 2018 - backup date reserved for the last third attempt.
Important! Pupils who have not passed the final essay will not be admitted to the GIA and EGE, and accordingly, they risk not getting a long-awaited education certificate and forfeiting the right to continue their studies at the university.
For applicants who will choose for themselves a philological direction, the essay will play not only the role of a pass to the unified state examination. It can be submitted for admission, getting additional points and increasing your chances for a budget place in a good university.
Although there is nothing to be afraid of, because statistics show that in 2017, 95% of graduates coped with the task on the first attempt.
The format of the final essay
In 2018, future graduates will write a December essay at their school, as has been the case for several years. On the appointed day, pupils of 11th grade will be seated in pre-arranged classes, and 15 minutes before the start of the test, the topics of essays on literature will be announced, which in the 2017-2018 school year will differ for regions located in different time zones.
It takes 4 hours to complete the work, which, in the opinion of the students themselves, is quite enough to write the necessary 250 words, after reflecting on a given topic.
Please note that a threshold of 250 words is a necessary minimum. In reality, a good essay should contain 300-350 words on average. Moreover, practicing at the preparation stage, it is better to focus on completing the work in 3 hours 30 minutes or 3 hours and 40 minutes.
For children who have the right to organize special conditions for passing the first final test, the essay can be conducted at home or in a lighter format of presentation. But, this right is granted solely on the basis of documentary evidence and recommendations of the psychological, medical and pedagogical commission.
The result of the composition (“offset” or “failure”) will be announced closer to the end of the calendar year.
As in the previous season, this year students will be evaluated by students of the school, together with experts. Checking the final essay important for the graduates of 2018 and making a decision, teachers will take into account the following areas and criteria:
|№||Criterion||What is checked?||What will they do for fail?|
|1||Matching topic||The content of the essay and the student's ability to reason on a given topic are checked.||
The work does not correspond to the topic or does not have the purpose of the statement.
Automatically there will be “fails” at work in general!
|2||Argument||The ability of a graduate to use literary material from different studied works for arguing his position is tested.||
In general, there is no attraction of literary material, or in the event of a significant distortion of the content of the literary work to which the student refers.
Automatically there will be “fails” at work in general!
|3||Composition||The logic of the chain of reasoning, the ability to withstand the optimal ratio between the thesis and the proofs is checked.||In this work, there is a complete lack of a thesis-proof part or gross logical violations that prevent us from understanding the essence of the reasoning.|
|4||Speech quality||Verification of the speech design of the text, the level of knowledge of literary Russian.||Very low quality of speech, the work contains many speech stamps, colloquial (not literary) words.|
|5||Literacy||Check text for grammatical and punctuation errors.||The student made more than 5 mistakes for every 100 words of the composition.|
As you can see, the criteria are not too hard. To successfully overcome the first test, it is enough to get a "test" by the first two criteria. And this means that it is enough that your reasoning will correspond to the topic and will be supported by literary material.
Please note that it is not enough just to refer to certain works. It is necessary to find specific literary examples, analyze the behavior and character of the characters, cite the author’s thoughts as a weighty argument.
That is why the most pressing question for 11th year students of 2017-2018 will be what topics they can offer this time for the final essay.
Themes of the December essay in the 2017-2018 year
It is impossible to learn the exact topics of the essay in advance, because they are kept strictly confidential and are disclosed 15 minutes before the start of the exam. But, for more effective training, students were offered directions, within the framework of one of which the topic will be chosen, on which they will write a final essay in 2017-2018:
- "Courage and cowardice"
- “Indifference and Responsiveness”
- "Human and society"
- "Goals and means"
- "Loyalty and treason"
For each of these areas there is a certain list of works, approved by the FIPI, in which an important problem is revealed and the information necessary for writing an essay is present.
Preparing for the final essay
Although there is not much time left before the first test, it is more than realistic to prepare well for an essay. For this you need:
- Read the recommended works.
- To analyze and write in a separate notebook important passages, events, names, portraits and thoughts of the characters that can be used to compose in one of the above thematic blocks.
- Practice writing essays.
The network is not difficult to find topics that were offered to students in 2016 and 2017. It will be good practice. But, do not be mistaken. Repeating previously used topics this year is unlikely. Therefore, it will also be useful to develop a block system of mes and arguments, according to which the student creates for himself a basis for reasoning on one of the global themes.
Consider the structure of the composition for each of the blocks. It should contain the following items:
|1||Introduction||About 100 words, 70 of which - the introduction. And 30 - eyeliner to the main part.|
|2||Main part||The main thesis and its argument based on literary works|
|2nd thesis and argumentation|
|3rd thesis and argument|
|3||Conclusion||Approximately 60-70 words.It’s worth starting a block with the final constructions “Summarizing ...”, “Arguing, I come to a conclusion ...” and others.|
Based on the literary material, proceed according to the scheme:
- Specify the author and the full title of the work.
- Describe very briefly the situation which, in your opinion, corresponds to the thesis (no need to retell the text).
- Give your assessment and give the opinion of the author.
- Summarize the subtotal.
Remember that the transition from one work to another should be smooth, and therefore it is advisable to think of small introductory sentences, thanks to which the text will not look ragged.
Experienced teachers, graduates of which every year successfully pass not only an essay, but also the exam on literature, recommend:
- Read not only works in the original, but also criticism. This will give the necessary base of thoughts and arguments that can be operated on while writing.
- Processing different blocks, alternate them, not fixing on one direction.
- Do not rush to write an essay immediately after reading the work, give yourself time to comprehend the reading.
- Always start writing an essay with a plan, it will save time and will not let you forget about the important nuances.
- Try to avoid constructions that express an uncertain position, such as “it seems to me”, and also maintain emotional balance without overloading the composition.
The secret of success is simple - and it is in practice! Write essays, analyze your work and make adjustments, achieving the highest possible result.
