Schiphol airport expansion entrusted to Aecom
The team, led by the American design firm Aecom, was chosen from among the teams claiming the right to design the pier, which will expand Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam and add eight boarding gates.
Aecom will work on the project with three Dutch companies: Cepezed Architects, dGmR (engineering support) and Copijn (landscape works). The customer, Royal Schiphol Group, chose the Aecom project based on the criteria of visual appeal of the proposed architectural solution and the cost of its implementation.
Of the eight new exits, five on the north side are intended for narrow-body aircraft, three on the south side - for wide-body aircraft. At the subsequent stages of expansion on the south side, two more exits are planned to open.
Birgit Otto, on behalf of the management of the Royal Schiphol Group, commented: “We are extremely pleased that the pier will be designed by an international team of this level. Aecom Team have a clear vision of their role in achieving the objectives of Schiphol airport. ”
“This team was also able to demonstrate that the high pace of construction is not necessarily in conflict with Schiphol’s commitment to environmental friendliness and attractiveness to passengers.”
