Rogers introduced the project "Skyfarm" to overcome the shortage of food
The British corporation Rogers Strick Harbor and Partners has demonstrated its project aimed at preventing food shortages on a global scale.
Created as part of the research work for the exhibition in Milan (2015), the “farm” rests on bamboo-covered columns, and is expected to be installed in urban areas where there is little free land and the soil is of very poor quality. The multi-tier structure consists of a rigid round-shaped frame, which contributes to the maximum penetration of sunlight. Such a rack makes it possible to combine several levels for growing crops, as well as an aquaponic system. This makes it possible to grow crops with fish in the recycling process: nutrients from fish waste are supplied to plants, which in turn purify water for fish.
On the lower level, there is a shop or restaurant that attracts people and encourages them to visit the farm; there is also a space for learning or a special place from which all the growing parts of the tower are visible. Upstairs there is a large transparent tank in which fish are grown in fresh water. In the middle of the design, plants are grown not in the ground, but in water. The aeroponics system is located closer to the upper part, where plants are grown in an unusual way: a minimum of water with no land at all. At the very top of the building are water tanks and wind turbines. Practice shows that in order to build a tower in real conditions, it must be “easy to change its scale”, and then a 10-meter model can be built at school, and an 80-meter one can be built right on the city streets. It can also be adapted to a warm or cold climate.

The cost of initial investment in Skyfarm is higher than in conventional industrial agriculture, but this design allows you to receive products throughout the year and not transport products from other countries by air.Representatives of Rogers Stirk Harbor and Partners declare: “By 2050, about 80% of the world's population will live permanently in urban centers. During this period, the population of the planet is expected to grow by 3 billion people. It is estimated that if we continue to use traditional farming methods, then in order to feed all these “new people” we will need a territory that exceeds Brazil.
Recently, the project was recognized as the most rational, having received the corresponding award in the framework of The Architectural Review MIPIM Future Projects Awards 2016. Before that, the farm was named the project of the future at the World Agriculture Festival in 2014. Vertical farms are planned to be built in Seoul, Singapore and New Jersey.
