Patchwork: patchwork for beginners

Posted by17.10.2017

Patchwork is a word that is heard today. The name is beautiful, memorable, but in simple terms, this art can be called patchwork. We will get acquainted with him today.

We will tell you what lies behind this technique; let's talk about what you need to know a beginner who is going to master the patchwork sewing independently; We will give some useful tips that will be useful to each master; we will conduct a small patchwork workshop and show a few examples of products made in this technique.

What is patchwork?

To begin with, let's talk about the technology itself. It would be appropriate to talk about history here, but one should start from the beginning, and nobody still knows the history of the appearance of patchwork. Obviously, people started practicing patchwork a long time ago.

It is understandable, because patchwork is a great way to get rid of scraps of fabric, and therefore save. This was especially appreciated in times of scarcity, when every shred of matter was worth its weight in gold. In addition, patchwork is an example of disposing of cloth wisely. If some thing fell into disrepair, the hostesses cut it on rags and sewed something new.

Traditionally, this technique has always been used for sewing blankets and carpets. In this case, the upper part of the product was sewn from patches, and the lower part from some ordinary (not always beautiful) fabric. Between them was made lining of cotton or the remnants of an old blanket / mattress / pillow.

Today patchwork is rather a special kind of creativity and a way to create original and unique things. Products in the patchwork technique are valued very highly and no longer seem to be an attempt to save. They emphasize creative individuality and characterize the owner exclusively from the best side. Well, patchwork in the modern world is no longer used for making blankets (although it is also present), but for creating accessories: bags, purses, vests, etc. In a word, patchwork is back in fashion today.

What should a newbie know?

If you do not have a sewing machine, this does not mean that patchwork is not for you.It is quite possible to do patchwork and without the presence of this unit. If, of course, you are not going to sew a blanket: in this case, it is still better to use the machine so as not to spend a month or two on sewing. But if you decide to sew a cosmetic bag, purse or tack - why not do it manually?

No special quilting tools are needed. We will need:

  • material
  • strings
  • fabric for warp
  • stencils

Separately about stencils. Before you start sewing, you should definitely cut a stencil out of cardboard (or take ready-made, metal - they are in the departments for creativity). This is necessary so that all the details are the same.

As for the choice of material, there are no clever recommendations. It is most convenient to sew cotton, but you need to take into account that this material may shed and lose color over time. A coat is good, but if it is too thick, it will not be easy to sew. Silk and satin are beautiful, but the material is very crumbling, so the beginning master will definitely have some difficulties. Synthetic materials are convenient, but stretch fabrics can twist the product during the sewing process. Perhaps, there are no claims only to jeans.Anyway, practically any fabric is suitable for patchwork.

How to sew?

You need to start with a rough sketch of the product. Draw how you see it, and decide what you prefer: sewing squares or rhombuses.

Then you need to make a stencil. Let's say you want to sew diamonds. So the stencil should be triangular. Suppose the finished part is an equilateral triangle of 5 * 5 * 5 cm. This means that we need to make a stencil with sides of 5.5 * 5.5 * 5.5 cm (with a seam allowance). Note that for loose material, allowance must be at least a centimeter.

Cut the right amount of detail. Now we need to decide on the colors: how they will be combined, how many will be used.

When all the details are cut, make an approximate canvas out of them.

Zaglatyte details of 0.5 cm on each side (this is done for your convenience, so that the flaps do not get lost and were perfectly smooth).

Now they need to be tacked to each other from the wrong side (or stabbed with pins). Then we just sew them together. If we scribble on a typewriter, we make it a snake in order not to break the thread.

The most convenient way to sew stripes. That is, you need to fasten together a snake of triangles of the desired length, and then release the machine and postpone this part for a while. Then sew exactly the same. And then just fasten them together. When sewing from squares, you can sew the entire product at once, it is almost impossible to get off.

When the main patchwork fabric is ready, we connect it to the fabric base. You can stitch the product from the inside, and then just turn it out. And you can sew from the front, processing the edges of the canvas. It all depends on what you sew.

We hope that our advice will be useful to you, and you will master patchwork. Try small - sew tack. You will understand that it is much easier than it seems.
