How to connect the second hard drive?

It often happens that one hard drive, which you bought with your PC, is not enough to accommodate various information on it - video, music, games, programs. In this case, the purchase of a second hard drive may be an option. And now I'll tell you how to connect the second hard drive to the computer.

Solutions to the problem

Modern technologies are moving forwardand now even in the case of such a procedure as connecting an additional hard drive (hard disk), you can choose from several options. First, there is the option of replacing an old hard disk with a new one with a large volume, but we will not describe this procedure, since it is a replacement for a new one, not an additional one. But the other two options - this is the installation of an additional disk or disks.

Connecting an External Hard Drive

This way I put the beginning of our smalllist, because it is the most simple and convenient. An external hard drive (also known as a USB HDD) is a disk drive that is connected to a computer via a USB connector. Today, external hard drives are already available for immediate use. That is, they bought the "outsider", came home, plugged the cable into the connector and use it for health. Only a few recommendations. Do not buy too large an external disk (from 2 TB or more) - they are not yet very stable, and their service life is often lower than that of a 512 GB or 1 TB drive. Personally, when I came to buy another hard drive, I stopped on the 512 GB version, bought a Toshiba brand drive - fast, reliable, with a beautiful and strict design. It was 2 years ago and it still works fine, no complaints. Soon I will go for another "additive" - this time I'll take Toshibov's terabyte. External hard drives are an ideal option for those who accumulate a lot of data. Out of the shortcomings of "outsiders" I note a rather weak anti-shock protection and slower reading speed of information (and therefore, copying from / to an external disk). And more: USB HDD can be used only for data storage, it is impossible to put the operating system on it.

Connecting an internal drive

Now let's move to the internal discs. Before installing the second hard disk, determine its volume and type (format). As for the volume, then everything is simple - you choose the right one and that's all, since internal hard drives work well enough for any volume. Better, of course, not to choose a disc of maximum size and too small, since in the first case these discs are newer and who knows how they will behave in the work, and in case of minimal volume, think: will not it be necessary to run after six months or a year a new disk? As for the formats, that is, IDE disks, and there is SATA. If you do not have a very old computer, I advise you to choose SATA as a faster and more modern version. In any case, it is better to know in advance what format your motherboard supports and what connectors it has.

Connection Instructions

Now let's talk about the actual installation of the disc. How to connect the second hard drive to the computer? At first, one important rule: do not place the hard drives too close together to avoid overheating. If there are two free sockets nearby, it is better to install a new disc in the far cell so that the middle one remains free and normal air circulation is possible. Install the hard drive in the cell and fasten it there with screws. Now we connect the disk to the motherboard and to the power supply unit using the cables with connectors. If the power supply does not have one more SATA cable, buy a SATA-Molex adapter - this solves your problem. This adapter will be needed to connect the power supply to the hard drive. To connect the drive to the motherboard, you will need a SATA cable with a L-shaped connector (you can ask the retailer in advance if it is not included in the package, so you do not have to run to the store afterwards). Depending on where you put this connector on the hard disk (where everything is signed), it will be perceived by the computer either as a master hard disk - Master, on which you can put the operating system, or as a slave - Slave, used for data storage. Well, now you know how to connect the second hard drive to the computer.
