CHRISTMAS EARLY - THE Eve of CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS
Christmas Eve with Orthodox Christians is the eve of Christmas, the final day of the 40-day Advent, which is celebrated on January 6th.The word "Christmas Eve" comes from the word "sochivo" (soaked wheat with honey). The grain personified the resurrected life, and honey the sweetness of the future blissful life. According to tradition, it was supposed to have a taste of food only at the end of the liturgy (worship). Also in Orthodoxy, the custom is not to eat until the first evening star appears, symbolizing the appearance of the Star of Bethlehem, which announced the birth of Christ.
Church service on Christmas Eve
The evening church service (Christmas night service) lasts for three hours. Then the liturgy is served, and at the end of it, a candle is taken out in the center of the temple and the priests sing in front of it the troparion of the Nativity of Christ.
If Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the service at the end of the Christmas season is postponed to Friday. This is explained by the fact that, in Orthodoxy, Saturday and Sunday stand out among the rest of the week as holiday, and not fast.
Post on Christmas Eve
The church charter (Typicon) prescribes fasting until the end of the evening service. On Christmas Eve, believers refrain from eating food until the first star appears. Communists in the night liturgy fast for at least six hours before communion.
What is being done on Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve, Orthodox Christians remember the story from the Gospel about the worship of the Magi from the East to the God-child Christ. The sages brought gifts to the Newborn: gold (as King), incense (as God) and myrrh (as a human being for burial). This day is especially favorable for Christian philanthropy.
Dishes on Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve, believers eat only lean food. Do not eat meat, lard, eggs, dairy products. Alcohol is strictly prohibited. On the table should be sochivo (kutya), baked or boiled fish, fruits, vegetables. As a beverage, you can prepare a pvar of their dried fruits (compote or berry jelly).
Let's prepare our hearts for the coming of peace and love with the birth of the first evening star.
